BOARD < 150 L, FLAT WATER, WIND FORCE 2 – 4
Level 1: Sailing downwind, basic tack, basic gybes, sailing and staying upwind, wind awareness.
Level 2: Competent sailing with more advanced and quicker tacking and gibing, using a harness and the technique,
Level 3: More harness technique, however using a bigger sail with more power, getting planing and using the footstraps.
Learning to windsurf has never been so easy, with the introduction of new technology, lighter equipment and many advances in designs. The old image of windsurfing on old and heavy equipment, whilst falling in a lot, has been lost. Whether you are a complete beginner or are returning to the sport after a break, you will be pleasantly surprised. Boards are no longer really long and narrow, they are now shorter and wider, known as Wide style boards, this design is perfect for learners and progressing on. All you have to worry about is the fundamentals of windsurfing, the wind and technique, and not your balance. With these boards it is possible for you to progress with a very fast learning curve.
For those slightly more experienced these boards still provide use, as they plane super early and are great for light wind fun. New sail technology has also made windsurfing easier from beginners right through to the experts. Sails are now made out of monofilm of various kinds and there are different variations which range from being tough to lightweight.
Within a week, it is very feasible to get to a very competent level of windsurfer, happily staying up wind, and learning the basics of getting planing, and perfecting your technique. Below is a rough guide to windsurfing levels, and the skills you would acquire whilst participating at that level. |
