< 150L, FLAT WATER, CHOP, SMALL WAVES, BFT 4 AND ABOVE.
Level 4: Planning, Waterstart, Carve Gibe.
This is the level where it all comes together, and everything clicks. When you reach this level you should be flying along in a straight line in the harness and footstraps, before executing a tack or gibe / wipeout, and up hauling that sail.
Now you will learn the techniques that are the most valuable to windsurfing; water starting and the carve gibe. This is however the stage that most will spend a while at and many peoples main goal / aim is situated (as waves and jumps do not appeal to everyone). It is here that you become competent in sailing around in winds a lot stronger than those that you have learnt in.
Once the Waterstart has been cracked, smaller boards become unlocked to the sailor, so you can handle the stronger winds and the created chop, for a smoother more controlled ride. It is here where more trial and error comes into play. After private lessons or a clinic in how to carve gibe to get the motions and technique, the sailor will go out and try these at the end of each run as a means of turning around down through the wind, whilst keeping their speed. In some of the centres we operate with, they even give you the option of video analysis to help speed up the learning process. |
