South Africa is simply one of the most incredible locations in the world, at some point or other you must go !! It is stunningly beautiful, both on the beach and inland, has amazingly reliable wind conditions, excellent service which is always with a smile and great value for money. We simply cannot say enough about this place.
But it is not just the reliable wind and superb surf that make this such a good location, it is the huge amount of other activities on offer for those rare non-windy days and for the non-surfing partners and family - there really is something for everyone here.
South Africa has so much on offer it is often difficult to know where to start. Planet have spent considerable time and effort hand picking the very best accommodation, the best instruction and rental services and the best ground agents to ensure that you make the most of your stay. We appreciate that your holiday time is precious to you and do not take the responsibility for your holiday arrangements lightly! This is especially important with this destination with so much on offer.
There are so many places to windsurf, kitesurf and surf in the Western Cape, which is why it is so important to have a car and a good local contact. Here we will provide you with a basic overview, but when you book with Planet we will provide you with a comprehensive guide as well as a local contact who will be on hand to provide day to day recommendations and services (including 'downwinders').
River mouth or lagoon beach This is the closest spot to Cape Town, a short 10 minute drive from the city centre. There is a good sized beach here with a nice shallow area for the first 50 metres, good for the less experienced. The swell here tends to be smaller than at the more Northerly locations so it is good for Beg / Int as well as those wanting to try some easy wave sailing.
This is also an excellent spot to head with non-surfing partners as there is a good Thai restaurant and Cafe overlooking the beach. Note that this is very popular with Kitesurfers.
sunset beach Sunset Beach is one of the main windsurf locations with a good swell building with the wind in the late afternoon. There are no general facilities for the non-windsurfer here unless you are staying at our Sunset Beach Accommodation which is right on the spot.
dolphin beach Another popular Kitesurf zone and a favourite teaching Zone with a very large open beach area. The beach here is one of the most stunning and good for non-surfers, with the facilities of the Dolphin Beach hotel and Café one site.
The best time to visit South Africa is in their summer period from October through to March with the very best wind being from November through to February. The conditions are very reliable with wind speeds normally between 20 - 30 knots, the strongest wind coming between 2 and 6 in the afternoons.
As a UK passport holder you do not need to pre-book a visa. There are no vaccinations required at this time. The air temperature is a perfect 27 - 30c, you will need a 5mm full length wet suit as this is the Atlantic side of Africa.
