Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canaries although one of the least developed. You arrive at the airport in Puerto Rosario and head North to Corralejo (25 minutes). Generally it is a good idea to have car hire although this is not essential.
The Canary Islands offer excellent value for money and are easily reached, by several charter flights a week, with a short 3 hour flight.
Fuerteventura offers a variety of conditions depending on the time of year and location; from super flat shallow lagoons to full on wave sailing spots. We know this area extremely well so please call for a personal account and advice on suitability.
CORRALEJO - FLAG BEACH: Facing Lanzarote, Corralejo was once a small fishing village, now it is a thriving holiday town. The town is on one side of the large bay with apartments and hotels spreading round to the other. Flag Beach is about 4km from town, looking out towards Isla de Lobos. This area has hardly developed and the windsurf centre is across the dunes right in the middle of this long sandy beach.
WINDSURFING SAFARIS: There are many other more secluded spots all around the island (including some awesome wave sailing) that are best accessed on a safari. You can join groups of up to 6 windsurfers of similar standard, and be taken by 4x4 to a new spot each day. For the more adventurous this is an excellent way to get the very best from the island.
The windiest time in Fuerte is in the summer when a big high pressure sits over the Atlantic and a low over the Sahara. These combine to give reliable cross-shore winds at Flag Beach.
The swells which bring the best waves are caused by depressions in the Atlantic which are more prevalent in Winter.
Fuerteventura offers windsurfers the opportunity to sail in a whole variety of conditions. The summer gives the best winds, the winter the best waves. Flag Beach has a range of conditions; the wind is cross shore from the left with a sandy launch in front of the center with some shore break. 200m offshore is a deep reef that can provide good jumping and an ideal spot to start learning to wave ride. Wave sailors will want to try out some of the other breaks around the north that include Glass Beach, Punta Blanca and Cotillo. Each works in slightly different conditions.
Fuerteventura does offer a wide range for the non-windsurfer; don't forget this is a major holiday destination for many holidaymakers. The key activities are surfing, diving, horse riding, trekking and cycling.
Excursions in and around Fuerteventura are popular, especially round Lobos, mountain biking and surfing the world class breaks. You can also visit Lanzarote, which is only 45 minutes ferry ride away, take a trip to Lobos or just enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the deserted beaches.
In the evenings in Corralejo there are many restaurants to choose from offering Spanish and international cuisine, catering for everyone's budget. It is well worth making the effort to get to Cotillo to sample fresh fish. Of the many bars in the town, Corky's, as well as others, have surf videos running all night and then with the possibility of Waikiki taking your entertainment through to the small hours.
