Dahab is great for windsurfing holidays; it is located on the south eastern side of the Sinai peninsular facing Saudi Arabia across the Gulf of Aqaba. The scenery is spectacular, starting with the transfer from Sharm el Sheikh airport (approx.1 hour) winding through cliffs and wadis. In Dahab, the mountains make a picturesque background to the sparkling blue sea.
This is one of the best windsurfing spots we offer and is especially good for a wide mixture of abilities and year around excellent conditions.
The main spot in Dahab is the large bay pictured above.
MAIN BAY The launch is generally shallow for at least 50 meters, idea for beginners with its flat water.
SPEED STRIP At the mouth of the bay is the speed strip where the wind speed picks up dramatically and you can really get up and planning easily. Great for blasting and freestyle tricks.
BABY BAY On the back side of the bay, behind a large sand bar, you will find the stunning Baby Bay area. This is where the cleanest wind is to be found with no obstruction from any buildings that is so prevalent inside the Bay. The water here is a stunning turquoise colour and crystal clear; it feels amazing to be out in this spot. The windsurf centres will either give out a radio or accompany you with an instructor for safety in this area.
Dahab has an impressive wind record with around 300 days a year of winds between Force 4 and 7. It also has the benefit of a range of conditions to suit all levels of windsurfer. The wind comes off the land and over the sea in a cross off shore direction generally.
Dahab is one of our most popular resorts due to its incredibly reliable year around wind and variety of sailing conditions to suit all abilities. The flat shallow water runs from the beach for 2km before you get past the protection of the sandbank and into the swell coming down the Gulf of Aqaba. It is ideal for beginners, intermediate freestyle and slalom blasting
Directly from the beach the wind can be quite light and gusty, cleaning up and getting much stronger out at the mouth of the bay. For beginners all the centres have shallow flat water directly in front which is ideal, although the Harry Nass Centre 1 does have the ideal spot with a large shallow protected area with the best wind. For the more advanced sailors the Harry Nass Centre 2, (at the Iberotel) has an ideal launch for direct access to the sand bar and beyond.
The hotel standard around the main bay is generally quite high so non-windsurfing partners can indulge in relaxing in comfortable surrounding with good facilities on hand. This area of Egypt also offers a range of tourist attractions, the most notable being St Catharine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai (best visited on one of the sun rise trips), the coloured canyon and wadi trips. All tours are easily booked via your hotel. `
The Red Sea one of the world's most incredible scuba diving destinations. There are several dive schools in the area offering all levels of courses as well as daily dive tours. Please ask one of our Dive Travel consultants at our sister company Planet Dive on 0870 746 1266.
There is some limited kitesurfing available in a small lagoon to the left of the main bay with a Kitesurf school run by the Harry Nass Centre. They have a full range of Kitesurf courses as well as rental options. The spot is limited however due to its size and tidal conditions. Dahab makes a great location for a combination of windsurfing and kitesurfing but not for a pure Kitesurf holiday.
Start with Happy hour as the sun goes down and after dinner try some of the other hotel bars along the beach or head into Masbat which is an exotic blend of Bedouins, Egyptians and backpackers. Here you will find many bars, restaurants and bazaars. You can also join a trip out into the desert at night to a Bedouin Village for a meal and some stargazing.
