Golf De Roses, set in the province of Roses in Costa Brava, offers a superb summer short-haul destination. The 2 hour flight from the UK to Gerona Airport is followed by just a 1 hour taxi ride or drive. The countryside in this region of Spain is stunning, picturesque cottages and farm houses are dotted around a lush and fertile rolling landscape. The coastline here is a mixture of rugged rocky outcrops and beautiful coves and bays, some busier than others.
Golf De Roses is a perfect destination for families with children of all ages as well as those travelling with non-windsurfing partners or friends. There is a massive amount to do here as well as it being a perfect windsurfing spot, such as mountain biking, snorkelling, sailing, horse riding and walking. There are also a good range of child care facilities on offer close to the windsurf centre.
There is really only one place to Windsurf in Golf De Roses and this is at main spot where the Skyriders/ Club Mistral centre is based.
MAIN BAY The centre is based in the middle of a large bay and has clearly marked zones for windsurfing, kitesurf instruction and free kiting. The zones are not especially large in the mid summer month of July and August and care must be taken not to wander into the public beach area. If you are not under supervision of an instructor then it is best to head straight out from the small launch area and then stay about 50m from the beach where there is plenty of space.
There are 2 types of wind in this resort; the Tramontana that blows in spring and autumn and the thermal wind of the mid summer months.
Tramontana - This is a strong and slightly gusty wind that comes from the north coming side on shore from the left. This is generally better for windsurfers and more proficient kiters and the average wind strength is around 25 knots.
Thermal - during the summer months from June to September wind changes direction to a southerly side on shore wind from the right. The thermal wind is super consistent and perfect for beginner to intermediate windsurfers looking practice. This clean wind makes tricks and general progression much easier and is a really joy to ride!
Golf De Roses is suitable for all levels of windsurfer although certain times of year are better for some than others. During the spring and autumn when the strong tramontana wind blows, there can be fair-sized waves building up here, enabling wave freaks to get a good run for their money. Once the waves have gone, the spot offers a medium-height wind swell from the left and freeride opportunities are unlimited.
During the mid summer months the thermal wind is very reliable and builds up towards midday. In the morning hours, the spot is ideal for youngsters; with suitable kids' gear (boards and rigs), there is nothing to prevent them from being out on their boards. But generally during this season it is perfect for beginners to intermediates. When the thermal wind is blowing, the motto is freestyling and freeriding. Directly in front of the Club Mistral centre is the fine, sandy beach, which drops off gently and is about 80m wide. The shallow-water area in the water extends for 30m, perfect for moving on from beach start to water start or practising the power gybe.
Golf De Roses has many different activities on offer for all ages, a perfect destination for the whole family. This is a very active resort, everywhere you look you will see people jogging, mountain biking, race biking, swimming and more.
This area is also very famous for its 'skydiving' centre! You must try this if you have the nerve!
Golf De Roses is an equally good kitesurf destination, the Skyrider kite school is on site with all the latest 2007 North kites and boards plus a full range of courses.
In the evening there are many charming restaurants and cafés/bars dotted around within a 10/20 minute car drive away. For those seeking a little more 'action' there are some big night clubs and bars in the nearest main town about a 30 minute drive away.
