Kos is located north of Rhodes, close to Turkey and is a popular destination for windsurfing. The best windsurfing is in Psilidi where the village has built up some great hotels and simple apartments. It is a relaxing resort that will appeal to those looking for good value and a short distance from Kos Town with its restaurants, bars and amazing heritage.
PSILIDI situated on the beach in front of the Oceanis Beach Resort on the north east coast of Kos Island. This area is called Psalidi and it is well known for windsurfing and the Meltemi, the strong north/northwest wind which is blowing side/side off from the left, almost every day during the summer season.
KOHILARI BEACH 35 minute drive from the centre takes you to Kohilari Beach - a deserted sandy beach with no buildings in site. Here the wind blows cross onshore with waves ½ - 1 ½ meters high. A cool spot for windsurfers and kite boarders too!
THEOLOGOS (SUNSET/WAVE BEACH): 40 minutes drive and you will be in Theologos, a beautiful spot where the sea is alive and the coastline is rugged. The wind blows sideshore from the right. The current can be strong, but the waves are between 1 - 2 ½ metres high. There is a beautiful sunset every evening which you can watch from the only taverna at the spot, where the food is excellent.
The wind at FBC Kos is side/side-off shore from the left. Usually the wind is lighter in the morning when the majority of beginner courses take place. Owing to a slight wind shadow, there is a sheltered launch which makes it great for beginners and kids, as well as a stone jetty downwind of the Center to catch any drifters! The wind gradually intensifies through the day and gives way to sensational slalom blasting with swell/chops up to 1m on the outside. The water flattens off just upwind of the jetty – perfect for freestylers.
Kos is one of the few places in the world where all levels can practice their skills at the same time and practically all day long - beginners, intermediates and advanced! As well as the stunning views whilst sailing, the proximity of Turkey and Kos create a wind funnel system, making way to stronger winds than other spots on the island. The sailing area is large and safe, and there is dedicated Baywatch and Rescue service free of charge.
Other activities based at the centre/hotel include volleyball, tennis, table tennis and swimming pools. Within walking distance of the hotel are wakeboarding, waterskiing, diving & go-carting.
Mountain biking is also very good in Kos with regular rides organized and cycle lanes into Kos Town. Alternatively, another way to explore more of the island is to hire a car or motorbike.
Kos is not a kitesurf destination at this time.
The Surfers Bar on site is always very popular with the guests and is open every day serving cold drinks, snacks and cocktails at the waters edge. It stays open into the night and also has live music nights and beach bbq’s. There are bars and tavernas in the locality and Kos town is only a short taxi/bus ride away with both its interesting archeological sites and late night venues for the night owls! The famous Bar Street can keep you partying into sunrise, or for a more relaxing night take a trip to the local Thermal Springs where you can bathe in healing volcanic waters under the stars.
